KeePass password store will store all of your passwords in single a database. To create one,<\/p>\n

Step 1: Installation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Download the software from http:\/\/keepass.info\/download.html<\/a> and install.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Create the Initial Password Database<\/strong><\/p>\n

Run Application<\/strong><\/p>\n

Click\u00a0File -> New<\/p>\n

Create Composite Master Key.<\/p>\n

A window will pop up, prompting you to set a master password and\/or key file.<\/p>\n

The database will be encrypted with the one password you enter in above step.<\/p>\n

This is the only one password you’ll ever have to remember from now on.<\/p>\n

Make sure it is long enough and a combination of mixed characters.<\/p>\n

Remember.\u00a0 If someone somehow manages to get your database file and guesses the password, they could have access to all your passwords stored in the database.<\/em><\/p>\n

Step 3: Adding a New Entry<\/strong><\/p>\n

To add an account:<\/p>\n

Select Edit -> Add Entry, or just click the icon.<\/p>\n

Enter the following: (for each specific web site)<\/p>\n

User Name: Your User name<\/p>\n

Password: \u00a0Your Password<\/p>\n

Repeat: Your Password again<\/p>\n

URL: The address of the web page<\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> The easy way you can get the URL is to:<\/p>\n

Go to the website in your browser<\/p>\n

Right click on the address bar<\/p>\n

Select Copy.<\/p>\n

Then paste it into the URL field of the best password app.<\/p>\n

Installing KeePass on a portable drive is easy.\u00a0 Once you install a copy on a USB drive, plug this USB drive into any PC you are using. \u00a0Now, access all of your personal websites, accounts, and passwords!<\/p>\n

Installing Portable KeePass<\/h4>\n

Download the zip archive containing the software<\/p>\n

Plug in your USB drive<\/p>\n

Create a new folder and rename it to KeePass<\/p>\n

Unzip the contents of zip archive into KeePass folder on the USB drive.<\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> Don\u2019t have an unzip utility? Simply double-click on the archive to open it. \u00a0Select and copy the contents, then past into KeePass folder.<\/p>\n

Now, locate to the KeePass Password Safe database created on your PC (by default it will be located under Libraries -> Documents)<\/p>\n

Copy this database file to KeePass folder on the USB drive.<\/p>\n

Double-Click on KeePass.exe<\/p>\n

The first time you launch portable KeePass password manager app, it may not find the database.<\/p>\n

Navigate to KeePass folder on the USB drive<\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> For faster access, place a shortcut to keePass.exe in the root folder on the USB drive.<\/p>\n

What is KeePass Password Safe?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

KeePass Password Safe is a software that stores passwords securely in an encrypted file or a database. This database is locked with a single master password, a key file and\/or the current Windows account details.<\/p>\n

What is a KeePass composite key?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To open a database,\u00a0all<\/strong>\u00a0key sources (master password, key file, and current Windows account details) are\u00a0required<\/strong>. \u00a0These key sources all together form a\u00a0Composite Master Key<\/em>.<\/p>\n

KeePass does not support login to the database by using alternative keys, i.e. it’s not possible to open your database using a password\u00a0or\u00a0a key file. \u00a0Use both at once, but not interchangeably.<\/p>\n

KeePass key file best practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Master Passwords<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you choose a master password to login to your database, this is the only password or passphrase you have to remember.<\/p>\n

Is KeePass safe?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

KeePass features password protection against attacks on the master password. \u00a0Likewise brute-force and dictionary. Read KeePass\u00a0security information page<\/a>\u00a0for more about this.<\/p>\n

KeePass master password\u00a0recovery<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Remember: If you be unable to remember this master password, all other passwords stored in the database are lost, too. There is no backdoor or a key which can open your databases. \u00a0In short, there is no way of recovering your passwords.<\/em><\/p>\n

Key Files<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The database can also be locked using a key file. \u00a0With Key Files, you don’t even have to recall lengthy, complicated master passphrase.<\/p>\n

What is a key file KeePass?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A key file is nothing but a file with a master password in it. \u00a0Key files are usually stronger than master passwords.\u00a0 This is because the key can be a lot more complicated. \u00a0However, it’s also harder to keep them secret.<\/p>\n

Advantages:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A key file can be used\u00a0as an alternative<\/em>\u00a0of a password, or in\u00a0addition<\/em>\u00a0to a password (and the Windows user account in KeePass 2.x).<\/p>\n

A key file can be any file you choose. \u00a0Although you should choose one with plenty of random data.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A key file must not be modified. \u00a0Modifying a key file will stop you opening the database. \u00a0In case if you want to use a different key file, you can change the master key and use a new\/different key file.<\/p>\n

Key files must be backed up. \u00a0Else you won’t be able to login to the database after a hard disk crash\/rebuild. \u00a0It’s similar to forgetting the master password. \u00a0There is no back door.<\/p>\n

Do not backup the key file to the same location where the database is stored. \u00a0Use a different directory or disk.<\/p>\n

File Location:<\/strong>\u00a0 Choosing a single file out of thousands present on your hard disk basically doesn’t increase password security. \u00a0Because it’s not too hard for malware\/attackers to find out the correct file. \u00a0For example observing the last access file timings, recently used files list, malware scanner logs, etc. can be used to identify the key file.\u00a0 Trying to keep the key file location secret is password security but not really effective.<\/p>\n

File Type and Existing Files.<\/strong>\u00a0KeePass can generate key files. \u00a0However, you can use any other, an already existing file like JPG image, DOC document, etc.<\/p>\n

Can\u2019t remember KeePass password? Use option Windows User Account<\/strong><\/h3>\n

KeePass 2.x Only<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Only KeePass 2.x and higher supports encrypting databases using Windows user account credentials.\u00a0 KeePass 1.x does not support.<\/p>\n

KeePass can make the database (.kdbx) dependent on the current Windows user account. \u00a0But, you have to enable this option. \u00a0Only you can open the database when you are logged in as the same Windows user while creating the database.<\/p>\n

Advantages:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

After\u00a0changing\u00a0your password, you can still open your KeePass database.<\/p>\n

Changing the Windows user account password doesn\u2019t affect the KeePass database.<\/p>\n

But, when\u00a0resetting\u00a0the password to a new one, access is not possible anymore.\u00a0 This is because the user’s Data Protection API (DPAPI) keys are lost.<\/p>\n

But there are exceptions.\u00a0 If the user is in a domain, Windows can retrieve the user’s DPAPI keys from a domain controller, or a home user can use a previously created Password Reset Disk.<\/p>\n

Disadvantag<\/strong>es:<\/h4>\n

If your Windows user account gets deleted, no way you can access your KeePass database.<\/p>\n

Also, if your computer hard disk gets damaged, it is not enough to just create a new Windows account on the new installation with the same user name and password.<\/p>\n

So, it is highly recommended to think twice before enabling this option.<\/p>\n

KeePass auto login<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The another beautiful feature is “Auto-Type” functionality. This feature allows users to define a sequence of keypresses. \u00a0The simulated key presses can be sent to any other open window of user choice (browser windows, login dialogs …), which allows automatic login.<\/p>\n

By default, the sent keystroke sequence contains\u00a0{USERNAME}{TAB}{PASSWORD}{ENTER}, i.e. first it sends the user name of the selected entry, then presses the\u00a0Tab\u00a0key, then enters the password of the entry and finally presses the\u00a0Enter\u00a0key.<\/p>\n

How to define an Auto-Type sequence in KeePass 1.x?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Write a single line sequence into the\u00a0notes field\u00a0of the entry, prefixed with “Auto-Type:\u201d<\/p>\n

Your notes should look something like this:
\nAuto-Type: {USERNAME}{TAB}{TAB}Some fixed string{TAB}{PASSWORD}{ENTER}<\/p>\n

Things to remember while defining auto-type sequence:<\/h4>\n

An auto-type sequence cannot be defined using two or more lines.<\/p>\n

If two or more auto-type sequences are defined, the first one will be used.<\/p>\n

How to define an Auto-Type sequence in KeePass 2.x?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Auto-Type can be configured for each individual entry. To configure the\u00a0Auto-Type,<\/p>\n

Go to tab page in the entry dialog<\/p>\n

Select an entry –> Edit Entry<\/p>\n

Here you can specify a default sequence and\/or customize specific window\/sequence associations.<\/p>\n

Backup & Synchronization:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Backup and Synchronize KeePass database (.kdbx file) to cloud by using the following plugins.<\/p>\n

KPGoogleSync for Google Drive<\/p>\n

KPDataSave to store passwords database files in Dropbox<\/p>\n

KeePassOneDriveSync to synchronize multiple local databases with multiple databases stored in OneDrive.<\/p>\n

KeePassIPhone to convert KeePass 1.x password databases to iPhone bookmarklets.<\/p>\n
